Half finished media studies video

We published this on Facebook to get feedback from our target audience. This was to see if we could improve upon anything in the second half of the video, or change something in the first half. We created a separate group and added those who we wanted to appeal to. The feedback we got was really positive. It is as follows:

    • Rosie Hazell LOVE IT!!! It's actually amazing! Like waaaaaay better than I ever imagined.... Especially like the beginning, and all the speeded up bits :) (b ut don't like the bit with me singing ;) )

Editing: Wind up doll sequence

We began editing for the wind up doll sequence. We uploaded it into premier pro and edited it in accordance with the music and the storyboard we had previously made. Jodie and I then thought it would be a good idea to add effects to the shots. We thought it would look good to make them black and white with a grain sheen across it. This would make it appear older, similar to an old film reel which was the effect we are going for. This would also make the coloured shots seem a lot more powerful and punchy after the grey shots.
Here is a sequence of the finished shots:

We have started filming the party sequences. The way we are doing this is to make sure the shots are short and snappy to create the chaotic effect.

Filming 3 Saturday 16th

Firstly, I began the day by creating the mise-en-scene. I did this in three different rooms, the bathroom (used for the print work) and my sisters bedroom (also used for the print work.) I tried to make sure that the mise-en-scene was very similar to the print work to allow continuity.

Secondly, I started creating the mise-en-scene for the party scenes in my garage. I did this by collecting lots of empty wine bottles, beer cans etc and littering them all over the side. I then threw streamers, party poppers all over the room and littered it with wine glasses. I also dangled fairy lights from the ceiling to add to the glamorous feeling. I also placed lots of random objects about the room to add to the interesting effect in the video, for example; cowboy hats, a duck with sunglasses on and a tractor go-kart. I felt that this would inspire the cast to use the objects around them and then it would create the wild, crazy atmosphere.

We had planned that Sam, Emily, Leah and Cat arrived at 3 to film the separate shots of them in the house. However, Emily was really late so we had to film her shots later on in the evening. This did not set us back though as we filmed the 'getting ready' shots of Sam relatively quickly and she was very enthusiastic and efficient. We then filmed the shots of Leah and Cat kissing in the bathroom. I had filmed the panning shots through the house earlier that day so we didn't waste time filming those rather than filming the cast.

Once everyone arrived, we began filming all the group shots. Although some people didn't turn up, we had around 20 people and this was really good as we could create lots of good dance shots and shots of various people. We provided them with food so that they would have the energy to do a long shoot, as we expected it would take around 3/4 hours to get enough shots.

We put loud music on and just allowed them to dance and drink alcohol while filming them, that way it didn't look staged. We referred back to the shot list but also improvised a lot of shots, for example, Leah and Emily walking in and dishing out the alcohol and various close ups of people dancing.

We had to change part of the video as Jordan and Sam Ruane became too embarrassed to dance, so we had to use George. We changed the storyline to George walking through the door and Sam looking flirtatiously at him. He then got approached by lots of girls but only wants to talk to Sam. We filmed lots of shots of Sam and George looking longingly at each other. It looked really good although it was quite funny to film.

We filmed lots of shots inside the house, such as shots of people 'crashed out' on my bed and shots of Sam 'waking up' from her 'dream.' Overall, I felt the shoot went really well. I feel that the mise-en-scene and lighting came across really well on the camera and the acting looked really natural and it seemed as though they were having a really good time.

Filming 2 - Wednesday 12th - Carleys house

Estimated time: 3 hoursEverything went smoothly in getting the lights and cast to Carley's house and the costumes, make up looked really fantastic and exactly how we wanted them. The 'wind up doll' dress looked absolutely amazing, Carley had done a really good job on the key part and it looked really effective. Here are some pre-production photographs we took

Emily Jones putting on costume and point shoes, make up not complete.

Here are unedited images of what the cast looked like: Jodie and I were really pleased with how the costumes/make up looked like.

After we had applied the make up etc we began filming. Firstly, we began filming the 'wind up doll scene' with Em. We instructed her for each shot and filmed approximately 8 seconds for each shot so that it would be long enough to edit each one properly. We filmed each shot according to the shot list we had printed off.
We filmed lots of separate shots of the characters to make sure we had enough to work with and edit, for example, we did lots of shots of Leah Cheung and Sam dancing against a white wall. We also took a lot of stop motion shots on the SLR Camera, for example, shots of the Sam shutting and opening her eyes in a scary manner.
We also improvised a lot of the shots, filming Carleys bearded dragon, Gizmo. We positioned Gizmo on a table full of dust and an old fashioned sewing machine which added to the weird mise-en-scene. We also did up close shots of Gizmo to add effect, which meant we had to film up close for ages and wait for the creature to move as they are naturally still animals.

I found that the lighting was easy to set up as I had had an instruction from Kate earlier in the day. However, in Carleys room there it was quite a confined space and it was hard to position the lights pointing towards the cast. Also, I feel we were using the wrong Gel for most of the shoot, we used to blue gel which made it a bit too dark. In retrospect, we should have experimented with the lights more before beginning to film.

Half way through the shoot, both cameras ran out of battery! Luckily, we had filmed a lot. However, we had not filmed the vital part which was where the puppets slump over, showing that they are toys. This meant that we needed to change the end of the video. Jodie and I decided a good idea on Saturday would be to film Sam 'waking up' in my bed, implicating it was all a dream. She could then walk over to her dressing table (seen in previous shots) and a few of the props from the Puppet scene could be on the desk. This would add an extra twist to the video and make it slightly more relevant.

Filming 1 - Wednesday 12th - Photography Studio, College

Estimated time: 1 hour
During the lunch hour, we invited some of our cast to come to the photography studio to film some of the short miming scenes which will be in the video to create a choppy, diverse and weird look for the video. After turning on the lights etc, we asked each cast member to go up one at a time and sing to the first two verses of the song. To save anyone being embarrassed, everyone sang along with them.
It did go well, although at times when I had to camera, I was allowing it to slip so that it looked slightly off place. Next time I will remember to turn the 'lock' part of the tripod on so that it doesn't look messy and we have more to edit. Everyone looked confident and we got some extra bits of filming of some of the cast members dancing, being silly etc which could look good in the video as it will reflect the fun vibe we are aiming for.

Lighting tutorial

Before we began filming on Wednesday, Kate, our Media Studies teacher gave us instructions on how to set up the lights and use different effects on them too. I found them easier than I thought it would be to construct them and I enjoyed playing around with the different Gels there are to create different shadows etc. We felt that the best Gel for the Puppet scene would be the one with a blue tint across it.

Research and planning: Wednesday 12th filming and Saturday 15th

Considering we are filming two big parts of the video on Wednesday, my partner and I have organized ourselves early. I took the costumes to my partners house so she would have them ready in her car to take from college to our 'make up artists' house on Wednesday. We also need to book the photography studio for Wednesday so we can film our head shot miming scenes, if not, we will film the puppets miming against a good back drop at our 'make up artists' house. We will be doing two trips from college to Carlies and back to college because we need to take the lighting equiptment as well as the cast to Carlies house.

We have allocated tasks to eachother, for example; as I bought the dress for the wind up doll, the streamers for the party scenes and the party poppers for the party scenes, my partner will be buying the whipped cream which we will need for Saturday.

These are the shots which we will need to film...
Carlies stairs

On Saturday, Sam, Leah, Cat, Em and Leah Cheung should arrive at my house at 3 to film the separate shots eg: in the bath etc.
Then, at 5 everyone will arrive to film the group shots. I have organize this by sending them an email.
Milly Morris January 11 at 10:56am
Hello my little glistening balls of prospects and media marks.
On Saturday, could Sam, Em J, Roz, Leah D, Cat Jones, Leah Cheung arrive at my house at 3pm please to do the separate, main shots? This will give you the day to revise? If not you can sit in my house with a few books and Neil, Anne and Bailey may even test you ;)

Could everyone else arrive for the group shots at 5pm and go round the back to my garage (my parents get all tetchy about the door/dog/menstrual cycles)?
Remember to look all partyish and glamorous, heels and dresses or quirky and weird. Don't worry if you look over the top, that is what we are going for.

Also, if anyone has any random objects eg blow up palm tree it would be much appreciated if you could bring them.

IF ANYONE HAS ANY EMPTY WINE BOTTLES/BEER CANS, PLEASE COULD YOU BRING THEM
Thanks fellas.

Planning and Research: Possible changes to costume

I really like this dress because it looks really authentic and very weird. It also creates an old fashioned style which will add to the unique vibe of the video, click here to enlarge the photo. We are going to use it for Sam to wear in the puppet sequence. However, it is slightly large and Sam is very slim so I will have to pin it at the back. I will put accessories it with items from the previous costume, for example the flower pin and possibly the blue suede jacket. It will look fantastic with the make up we have planned for Sam.

Experimental Stop Motion

I felt that becuase we are using stop motion in our video, I should practice filming and editing it. I used Leah and Cat who were on the same free as me.

I found that Stop Motion was really easy to make, but hard to edit. I am really pleased with this video and I feel that Stop Motion will work really well in my music video. I found t it was hard to edit as it can stop abruptly at the end and so I had to work out how to 'fade' the music and image which I still feel I didn't do as well as I could. Also, it could of been slightly longer.
I will also be making an experimental video on past paced editing to see how hard it is and to see what I can improve on to help me for when I edit my video.
I also need to remember to take many more photos than I did in the experiement because I did not have as many as I would of liked in the experiment.

Animated Storyboard and Shot List

I am pleased I have done this animated because it helped me to arrange the timings of shots for the video. I realised I have to cut the last part of the song because otherwise the video would total at around 6 minutes all together which is too long and would take a very long time to edit at a good standard.

Planning: Make up

This is my 'make up artist' Carley, as you can see she is very talented at make up design and costume.
She has a degree in the subject and is really creative. I have seen her do peoples make up for costume parties etc and she is highly talented. She is also very reliable and puts in lots of effort into making costumes/make up designs.

I really like the make up on this model, especially the jewels around her eyes against her pale face. I think this would look really effective
as Sam's eye make up and would work with the eccentric look we are trying to achieve.

I think this looks amazing, I love the bright colours and I feel it would look amazing on Leah Cheung when she is dressed as a puppet. I like the black lines on their faces and the little coloured hearts etc which gives them a playful look.

I love the bright, eccentric colours on the models face. I feel this look could be achieved easily but has the potential to look slightly tacky so it might be better to go for completely weird and crazy make up to avoid it simply looking tacky.

I really like the models pale face and startling red lips. It creates a really nice contrast. I also like the backcombed hairstyle, I feel this would look good on Sam. I would also like to include ribbons, bows and flowers in her hair.

Planning: Shot Techniques and Inspiration

During our video, the 'puppet' scene will involve Stop Motion editing. Therefore, I decided to get inspiration from official music videos and also some help from YouTube tutorial videos to help us as it seems a complicated, long winded task.
We will also be using a fast paced, disjointed style of editing for the party scenes to make them seem raucous and out of control.

Inspiration for Stop Motion
Inspiration for this video was Kate Nash's 'Foundations' which uses Stop Motion throughout the video. Also, I looked at 'Her Morning Elegance' by Oren Lavie which shows clear stop Motion editing. I really liked the images of the girl walking across the bed, which inspired me for the puppet/wind up doll scenes as I feel it will look really effective. The third video on Stop Motion was really inspiring and looks amazing.
However, we are only planning on using Stop Motion for certain parts of the videos so it should be slightly easier. I think it will look good to use stop motion on the 'wind up doll' as she walks across the room to give a disjointed, vintage effect. I think the main difficulty will be editing the stop motion so that it fits in with the beat of the song. I researched various Youtube videos to see if any could help me.

I found this tutorial really easy to understand, it's simple and effective. It also inspired me for a stop motion shot in the party scene of a glass of wine filling up and going back down as the evening progresses. I think this would look really simple but also really effective. I think it would also be a good idea to do stop motion of one of the puppets batting their eyelashes, playing drums etc so they all have a disjointed and inhuman feel.

Fast Editing

During the party scenes, we require various styles of editing. Mainly, the shots will all be very fast paced to create a raucous, out of control atmosphere. I feel that the video 'Just Dance' by Lady Gaga does this really well as the party scenes are constructed via fast moving, uncoherant shots. I really like the way every shot seems to flow well into the next, creating a whirlwind effect that could be percieved as a point of view shot aswell.

Planning: Planning for filming

I have booked the Camera and lighting equipment out for Wednesday 12th January and Friday 14th January. On Wednesday, during the half an hour lunch break at college, we will use the photography studio to film the performance part of our video. We will be using several people for this and will film them miming the whole song a few times so that we can cut out the bits that look good and use them.
On Wednesday evening, we will take the lighting equipment to Carlie's who will then do the 'puppets' make up. She is also constructing the key for my wind up doll dress for the video.
We will then film using the lights outside against her old, vintage house which will be a really good backdrop.
For the 'party' scenes, I have informed all the actors about coming to my house on Saturday 15th January, as I work on that day I will need to organize a shift swap with a colleague.

To prepare for this, I sent an email via Facebook to my actors to see who could come and who could not etc.

Hello fellas.
Right, basically we need to film the video in three seperate parts...
Firstly, we need to film the 'puppet' scenes which involve Em Jonerz, Sam and Leah Cheung at Carlies house in St.Johns. The only day Carlie can do is a Wednesday so next Wednesday 12th of January as we finish at 2.30, would we be able to get the bus into St.Johns whilst Jodie drives with the lights in her car to Carlies? Let me know if this is possible.

Secondly, we need to film the miming scenes in the photography studio and therefore need to book it for a free. This involves Rosie Hazel, Leah Dennison, Cat and anyone else who is on a free with these lot. Will let you know what day we have booked it for to arrange a free if its ok with you to mime for us.

Thirdly, we need to film the party scenes which may take up a whole afternoon/evening. I am thinking of doing a Saturday and getting my shift swapped to do it so I need to know if you would all be able to attend around 1 on a Saturday to my house? It will be Saturday 14th January.

Here is the shot list...
Look through it if you want as it includes peoples names just incase you feel uncomfortable with anything we have put you down to do so we can change it :)
